Karakami is a traditional decorative paper created using techniques similar to woodblock printing. It is made by applying patterns to paper using wooden printing blocks intricately carved with various motifs.

Traditionally used as fusuma (sliding door) paper to embellish Japanese interiors, karakami is now widely embraced in modern spaces as wallpaper, architectural elements, and lampshades.

About the Pattern

The Ichimatsu pattern is said to have originated from the Edo-period Kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu, who was fond of the design.

The “Shichisuji Ichimatsu” pattern is composed of checkered squares formed by bundles of seven lines.
